Are SOG knives worth the cost?
For a while now, I’ve been a long time believer in the SOG family of knives. To me, at least in my mind, they seemed to be a credible trustworthy maker of tough blades. That was until I purchased my last blade from SOG and discovered exactly how credible and reliable the company is.
Are SOGs worth the price?
My answer to this question is no.
After buying a SOG Seal team knife, with the black tini finish and using this blade for multiple purposes, I found the blade material to be almost impossible to sharpen.
AUS8 steel is hardly the best blade steel to use in a practical manner. It becomes dull very quickly and does not retain it’s edge profile very well. Thus making it almost impossible to reapply a good edge to after heavy use. Although I love the design of this knife and it’s looks are very daunting, but sharpening is downright horrible.
I purchased a SOG machete with the Tanto tip, called the sogfari. Horrible blade material. Horrible handle construction. After prolonged use in the form of chopping, the handle became loosened from the tang. So I sent SOG a letter along with the UPC from the package, to inform them of the problem.
Instead of a letter in response, I received a catalog. No inking of concern. No reply. Just a crappy catalog. So I called them.
It would seem that not only are their quality inspections failing, along with the product itself, but their customer service is just as horrible. I was asked, “How long do you think Machetes should last?”
I answered, “Longer than one day building a deer blind?” The response? “What’s a deer blind?”
Onward to my last concern. I bought the “Agent”, a 200$ knife. When I received the knife, I found that the leather disk handle was horribly misshaped. It looked as if it was improperly ground. Instead of being round, it had a highly visible flat edge from the butt of the handle to mid-length. About 1/16th of the edge of this was not sealed, and the blade itself had been apparently slightly hit by the same machine, at the very tip of the blade there were rough spots as if someone nailed it on a grinder. So I packaged it up and sent it back to SOG for inspection along with a letter, receipt and all of everything that came with the knife.
After 4 weeks I called SOG. Yes they received the knife, but said they decided that I had done the damage myself? I was shocked. I had the knife for maybe 24 hours, only held it for maybe a full hour before repackaging and sending it back the very next morning. Besides this, they never called. They even dismissed my letter and then attempted to deny that I sent my receipt. Yeah I know….
SOG knives have declined horribly in both quality and in customer service. I have yet to receive a refund, or a return, and as of the last communication, they have lost the entire package. They even went as far as to deny that they received it, even after talking with me about it.
So, are SOG knives worth the money? Not at all.
I was for a very long while a huge backer and supporter of SOG. As of now, their quality and reputation is in question. Comments on Amazon can be found in support of this. I’ve even read about the same issue I had with the leather handle on the Agent and other complaints related to SOG’s quality. I’ve heard enough from other unhappy customers to openly say, without question, SOG knives are no longer worth the cost.
One more thing, in the catalog they sent as a replacement for the machete, they list a folding pocket knife for over $500.00. I looked into this knife at a gun show in Georgia. I held it, opened it, felt it….you know what, I’ve bought knives over the counter at a gas station that had better quality and even the guy behind the table selling these knives admitted, SOG is not worth it’s heavy price tag.
SOG, fix your issues. Hell, fix my Agent, replace it, something, but as of now, your just not worth the money. I’ll never waste another dime with your products, and I suggest nobody else should either.
SOG is not worth your money, unless they start fixing their issues, they have lost my confidence and many others feel the same way. Good luck SOG!
